The
Town of Westport is situated just outside of New York City.
Manhattan is a short commute by train and the wonders of New England
can be found by walking just a few feet or driving a few miles in
any direction. It is not unusual for the daily population of the
town to increase to over three times the normal residency level as
people commute to Westport for business and to enjoy the many
amenities and sights that Westport has to offer. Westporters are
fortunate to be able to enjoy some wonderful old fashioned New
England surroundings while having the benefit of all the trappings
of a bustling, modern, urban environment.
The
Town of Westport is protected from fire and other emergencies by the
Westport Fire Department, a group of talented, dedicated individuals
that work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to ensure the safety and
well being of residents and visitors to the town. The Westport Fire
Department responds to roughly 4000 calls for assistance per year,
ranging from simple motor vehicle lockouts, animal rescues,
emergency medical calls and all types of regular service calls, to
structure fires with entrapment. I95 and the Merritt Parkway are
frequent locations for serious motor vehicle accidents and Long
Island Sound keeps the water rescue skills honed and the dive team
busy.
The
firefighters and officers of the fire department provide a wide
range of services to the public they serve. Our personnel take their
fire prevention duties very seriously, visiting the schools with the
fire safety trailer every year to teach the children how to be safe
from fire and other life hazards. An open house is held every year
to educate the public about the services available to them through
the fire department and other local utilities. Our fire inspection
division visits occupancies throughout the year to enforce fire
codes and provide safety information and training. Throughout the
year firefighters are also involved in many other public service
projects in their own time, off-duty, further enhancing the quality
of life for our town's residents.
Our
firefighters and officers are always looking for new ways to enhance
their skills and learn something new. All members are encouraged to
take part in extra training outside of the department as well as the
in-house training provided to each platoon. Many of our personnel
are members of outside agencies such as CT-TF1 US&R, Fairfield Fire
Training School, New York Fire School, CT Fire Department
Instructors Association, CT Fire Chiefs Association and many other
organizations. In-house training is conducted on a daily basis for
each platoon along with tours for inquisitive youngsters wanting an
up-close & personal look at the towns firefighters and the places
they work. |
